Today’s blog is a request for help from our loyal readers. I am writing on behalf of my Harvard classmate and fellow director of Kamakura Corporation, Dean V. Vance Roley of the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii.  We would like to call your attention to two very generous scholarships available to students from Japan for the Masters in Financial Engineering Program at the University of Hawaii.

The scholarships are provided by Mr. Jay Shidler, founder of Primus Re and many other firms, via the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation (CPASF):

  • The CPASF was established in 1959 to commemorate the wedding of then Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko, now the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
  • The purpose of the CPASF is to promote understanding between the U.S. and Japan by offering scholarships for study in Hawaii and Japan.
  • The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship is awarded annually to Japanese graduate students in Japan for study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and to American graduate students at UH Manoa for study in Japan who are pursuing a subject area leading to better understanding between Japan and the U.S.

These scholarships would be awarded to highly qualified successful applicants to the Masters in Financial Engineering program.  For more on the Shidler College of Business Masters in Financial Engineering Program, see

I hope that you will encourage any talented students from Japan that you know to apply for the MFE program and the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship.  For more information on the scholarship, please feel free to contact Mr. Toshio Murate of our Tokyo office or the Chairman of the CPASF Mr. Howard Hamamoto:

Many thanks for your help!
